Henley’s Comeback Falls Short

HILLSBORO, Ore. — The Henley Hornets were the 28th team to try and beat Sutherlin this year, but just like the other 27 before them, they came up just short, losing 51-46 in the OSAA 4A State Championship. Henley, despite being held to just 20 points in the first three quarters, scored 26 in the final frame and had a chance to tie it with under 15 seconds to go, but the game tying attempt was just short.

“What I told them at the end, when we were in the locker room, is those better not be tears of regret,” Henley head coach Shannon Carlson said. “We just don’t get to do this anymore together because that effort at the end of the game, they should be walking off the floor with their heads up. How gritty that was.”
“We knew Sutherlin was going to be a really good team and we just wanted to keep fighting and fighting and fighting and never give up,” senior Brittany Kochenderfer said. “We just had to keep battling until the end, and that’s what we did against Sutherlin.”

Of the six Southern Oregon teams to make it to state tournaments this week, the Hornets were the only one to make it past the semifinal round. Their loss ends their season at 25-2.
